GREGORY - INTER WANTED OLOF

ASTON VILLA boss John Gregory has confirmed that Internazionale made a late bid for his £5 million signing Olof Mellberg.

The Italian giants, as reported by planetfootball.com on Tuesday, were keen to bring the Swedish international to Milan, only for Gregory's persistence to pay off.

"Hector Cuper, who has left Valencia and taken over at Inter, is a big fan of Olof and I know, had we not secured his transfer, he certainly would have been heading for The San Siro," Gregory told the official Villa website.

"But we've been on the case for some time.

"I feel that we've built up a good rapport and I'm delighted that we've managed to beat off that interest and bring him here to England."

The centre back has not been registered in time to feature in the Intertoto Cup clash with Slaven Belupo.
