VARTY RETURNS TO CUMBRIANS

ROTHERHAM United defender Will Varty has re-joined former club Carlisle United after being released by The Millers.

Varty made 79 appearances for The Cumbrians during a four-year spell at Brunton Park before joining Rotherham on a free transfer in 1999.

The Workington-born 24-year-old played a peripheral role in United's promotion campaign last season, making just six league appearances for the club.

Commercial manager Steve Barker confirmed the deal, saying: "Varty has been training with us for the close season and we signed him on Thursday evening. He's a good player who has been at Rotherham for a bit and now he's come back to the club."

Meanwhile, Carlisle received a further boost when Tony Hopper, Mark Winstanley and Ian Stevens all signed new contracts with the club.

Barker continued: "Hopper, Winstanley and Stevens have all signed new contracts with us as well. Ian and Tony have signed 12-month deals, while Mark and Will Varty will be on three-month rolling deals."
