KUFFOUR COMMITS TO BAYERN

SAMUEL KUFFOUR has put paid to speculation linking him with a big-money move to Italy by signing a new contract with Bayern Munich.

The Ghanaian defender has agreed a two-year extension to his current deal, which was due to expire in 2003, despite attracting strong interest from Barcelona and, more recently, Roma.

Franco Sensi, the president of the Italian side, admitted that he had failed to bring the 24-year-old to Rome, as Bayern fought off the advances to retain their powerful centre back.

"We will extended his contract, which runs out in 2003, by two years in the next few days," declared Uli Hoeness.

The new buy-out clause in Kuffour's contract is set at below £11 million, perhaps not completely ruling out the possibility of a transfer in the future.
