JEWELL CONTINUES TOD INTEREST

WIGAN ATHLETIC boss Paul Jewell is to take a closer look at Dunfermline defender Andy Tod, as he continues his trial with The Latics.

Jewell was impressed with the centre half's performance against St Mirren and is hoping he can emulate that in their next game against Ayr United on Saturday.

"We are in for a centre half because we only have Pat McGibbon and Arjan de Zeeuw to cover those positions this year and Pat's got an injury," said Jewell.

"The opportunity came up for us to have a look at Andy Tod because he's in dispute with his club and it suited both parties to let him play for us.

"He played well and put himself in the shop window.

"I'll have another look at him on Saturday so there's a possibility that we might try and sign him but we might not. We'll have to see."

Jewell was happy with performances of other trialists Ian Nolan and Frenchman Johan Gallon, as well as new signing Peter Kennedy.

"It was OK. They worked hard and it was a good fitness exercise with no-one picking up any injuries.

"It's always the case in your first game that you don't want to try anything fancy.

"The lads have trained exceptionally hard and we have only been in training for a fortnight.

"So the fitness levels looked good considering we were up against a side in their fourth pre-season game."
