FERDINAND HANDED LEEDS CAPTAINCY

LEEDS UNITED`S record signing Rio Ferdinand has succeeded Lucas Radebe as club captain.

Radebe has held the armband at Elland Road for four years, but the South African has now relinquished his role to Ferdinand.

"Rio will be the captain of the club, "confirmed Leeds manager David O'Leary.

"I just felt he did very well towards the end of the season and grew into the role and I think he will prove a fantastic captain for many years to come.

"It's no reflection on Lucas Radebe who has done a brilliant job. He's a fantastic man to have around the place."

"I just felt that Rio's game improved when he did the job with Lucas out injured."

Ferdinand captained the side on numerous occasions last season, after an injury plagued campaign for the South African.
