SHERINGHAM REFUTES BETS SLUR

TEDDY SHERINGHAM has denied placing wagers against any of his teams and has reportedly called in the police to investigate claims that he was part of a betting scam during a previous spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

The England international, who moved to White Hart Lane from Manchester United in the summer, is alleged to have bet on games during his first spell with the North London club between 1992 and 1997.

Tottenham have issued a statement defending the forward after a series of e-mails were sent questioning Sheringham`s commitment in a number of games.

The statement on the club`s official website read: "Supporters should ignore the totally false and libellous e-mail which is in circulation concerning Teddy Sheringham.

"The message, clearly distributed to cause trouble, suggests Teddy placed bets on Spurs losing matches during his first spell at White Hart Lane.

"Teddy totally refutes the accusation and the club is totally behind him. We are actively trying to trace the culprits with a view to legal proceedings."

Sheringham has also defended himself, commenting: "All these rumours about my gambling are pure nonsense. I do like a bet but I have never backed against any of my teams.

"I don't know where the stories have come from. There has been talk of me having accounts with bookies and placing bets on the first scorer in certain matches.

"It has also been suggested that I have deliberately missed penalties to make sure the bets come up.

"All I would say is I would like to see the betting slips. I know some people will say there is no smoke without fire, but I can assure everyone that these stories are completely untrue and a slur on my reputation."

Sheringham, meanwhile, is hoping to be fit for the season opener against Aston Villa on Saturday, despite picking up an Achilles injury in a friendly.

"I have had to rest it for a couple of weeks but hope to be back in training this week. It has set me back a bit but I haven't ruled myself out of the first game," he commented.
