MALDINI CONFIRMS 2002 AZZURI RETIREMENT
"I have decided that after the World Cup of 2002 I will stop playing with the national side. I will not wear the Azzuri shirt again," said Maldini.
"I do not think I will leave Milan, I have a contract until 2003 when I will be 35, then we will see."
Maldini has been linked with a move to The Premiership in the past with Chelsea's name always prominent, but following a glittering career that has brought wealth and medals, Maldini is unlikely to be tempted away from Milan by any club which cannot live up to his own expectations and standards.
The Italian captain made his debut for the national side during a 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia back in 1988, three years after making his first appearance for Milan at just 16 years old.
Following his 1985 Serie A debut against Udinese, Maldini went on to appear in two major international finals, losing to France and Brazil in Euro 2000 and World Cup 94 respectively, and collect six Scudettos and three European Cup winners medals.
