COME AND GET ME UNITED - NUNO

NUNO GOMES has claimed that Manchester United have been in contact with his agent and issued a come and get me plea to the English champions.

The Portuguese striker was surprisingly linked with United on Friday, and the want-away Fiorentina star said he would jump at the chance to move to Old Trafford.

"Who wouldn't want to play for a great team like Manchester United?" Gomes told O Globo.

"They have already spoken to my agent and I am awaiting an outcome."

Sir Alex Ferguson already has four recognised strikers at his disposal in Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Andy Cole, but with the latter repeatedly insisting he does not want to be a bit-part player, the Scot may be persuaded to swap him for a man so keen to play for United.

Gomes came to prominence in Euro 2000, when he scored against England amongst others, but after a disappointing season in Serie A he would cost around £8 million.

The striker did show his class on Saturday as he crashed four goals helping Portugal to a 7-1 victory over Andorra.
