ARSENAL SLIP UP IN SPAIN

ARSENAL suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Real Mallorca as they failed to recover from an early goal at the Son Moix.

Arsenal were immediately handed an uphill task in their tie against Mallorca with Ashley Cole (pictured) seeing red after just 11 minutes.

The England starlet gave away a penalty after scything down Alberto Luque, which Vicente Engonga cheekily converted to give Mallorca the lead.

Luque was causing untold problems for The Gunners backline and forced David Seaman into a great save just before the break.

Mallorca looked to use their numerical advantage in the second-half and created several clear cut openings to finish off the game, but found England keeper Seaman in inspired form as he kept Arsenal in the tie.

However The Gunners failed to offer anything going forward, handicapped by the absence of Cole, and Mallorca cruised to their single goal victory.

Bundesliga runners-up Schalke slumped to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Panathiniakos.

Former Croatian international Goran Vlaovic made the breakthrough for the Greek side after 75 minutes and Agelos Basinas doubled the lead five minutes later.
