RUSSIANS BOSS PLANS CHANGES

RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS boss Brian Talbot has announced that Garry Butterworth is free to leave the club, as he looks to strengthen both his midfield and attack.

Butterworth is one of the club's longest-serving players, having joined them in 1994, and he has previously captained his country at semi-professional level.

Having recently enjoyed a successful testimonial, the club has acknowledged his contribution to their recent successes by agreeing to release him on a free transfer should the right offer come along.

Farnborough Town have already approached Butterworth over a move to Hampshire, although the Peterborough-born midfielder opted to remain with The Diamonds for the time being.

Talbot outlined the situation to the club's official website, saying: "Garry Butterworth went to speak to Farnborough on Monday. He thought about it overnight, and decided not to go. He wants to keep his options open for the time being.

"He's had a tremendous career here, been magnificent and I think he accepts it's time to move on. He's a first-team player and a first-class one, and I think if he goes back into the Conference he'll be fine."

The Diamonds boss is intending to replace Butterworth with Peterborough's Richie Hanlon, who is currently on-loan with the Division Three newcomers.

"Richie is a goalscoring midfield player who we're going to take on a permanent basis," he confirmed.

Meanwhile, the former West Brom chief also indicated that he is striving to ensure that The Russians' recent slide down the Division Three table is only a temporary blip.

"I have looked at the situation and I do believe we need one or two changes," he affirmed.

"What these players have done for this football club and myself over the last four years has been magnificent, but we want to kick on."

Hanlon has been joined at the club by defender Barry Hunter, who is on-loan from Reading, and Talbot hinted that there may be more new arrivals at Nene Park.

"We've got to bring in one or two people to get us through this transititional period who know their jobs.

"I want this club to be successful."

It is expected that his first assignment will be to find a proven goalscorer at Division Three level, with Carlisle United striker Ian Stevens (pictured) being linked with a move to the Northamptonshire club.
