SHODDY LAZIO STUNNED BY PSV

LAZIO'S hope of progressing into the second group stage of the Champions League looks increasingly small - after losing out 1-0 to PSV Eindhoven.

Lazio are the only team in their group to have failed to pick up a point, and Alberto Zaccheroni's first European game in charge saw big name players yet again fail to live up to their reputations.

The all-important goal came after Lazio failed to deal with a corner, and Kevin Hofland was on hand to lash home from close range.

PSV had unsettled their prestigious guests with their greater desire, and the Roman cause was not helped by the loss of Diego Simeone - the fifth player to get injured in the course of a game under Zaccheroni, who has only been in charge since last week.

The game ended in controversial circumstances, with Filipo Inzaghi felled in the box after a good through ball by Karel Porborsky - on for the disappointing Gaizka Mendieta.

Although the Biancoceleste players surrounded the referee, he waved away their protests and the Italian side must hope for a miracle if they are to continue in this competition.

Galatasaray's Sergin Yalcin scored the only goal of the game for the Turkish giants as they overcame Nantes 1-0.

The French side had dominated proceedings, and created the lion's share of the chances, but a bout of pinball in the box led to Yalcin pouncing to gleefully place home.

Yalcin then wasted a glorious chance to double the lead when he rounded the keeper but thumped into the side-netting with the goal gaping. It did not matter though, and Galatasaray will be delighted to have ended Nantes' 100% record in the group.

Three teams now have six points in Group D - with pointless Lazio bottom.
