BIERHOFF: KAHN CAN BE GERMAN CAPTAIN

OLIVER BIERHOFF has given up the German captaincy and stated his intention to retire from international football after the 2002 World Cup, should Germany qualify.

The 33-year-old target-man, now plying his trade at Monaco, was handed the captain's armaband by Berti Vogts three years ago but has failed to find a regular place in Rudi Voller's side and decided the time is right to step down as skipper.

"It was actually agreed that I would clarify the captain situation after the World Cup qualification," revealed Bierhoff.

"Oliver Kahn can carry on wearing the armband just like he has done in the games that I have not been included in. I don't have a problem with that."

The Golden Goal hero of Euro 96 spent most of last season warming the Milan substitutes' bench and was dropped from the national team as a result.

30 goals in 56 games are a testament to the front-man's goalscoring prowess on the international stage but Bierhoff intends to end his playing days with Germany after the Japan and South Korea finals and concentrate on club football.

"The 2002 World Cup will be the conclusion of my international career," vowed Bierhoff.
