RECRIMINATIONS START AFTER COPA COCK-UP

THE DISASTROUS decision to substitute Romanian Denis Serban in the 88th minute has come back to haunt Valencia coach Rafa Benitez, with the club fining him for his indiscretion.

Valencia beat Novelda 1-0 on Wednesday night, only for Benitez's substitutions to become the focal point of the game as along with Serban, Pablo Aimar, Robert Ayala and Yugoslavian Miroslav Djukic were on the pitch for the final minutes of the game.

Benitez's mistake will almost certainly end up with Valencia being thrown out of the Copa del Rey and the tie awarded to Novelda 3-0, although the RFEF will only meet on Tuesday to decide upon the matter.  However, there is no precedent in the Copa del Rey for this kind of incident, only the league.

The board of directors of Valencia will meet next week to determine the extent of the fine, whilst club official Juan Cruz Sun has offered his resignation to president Jaime Orti.

Orti will place this in front of the directors for a decision, but it is highly likely that it will be accepted.  Former player Robert, the current youth academy boss and Manuel Macia have been put forward as Sol's replacement.

"That was a serious error of mine.  I am the person in charge of all that happened and will accept any decision that the club takes," said Sol.
