DESCHAMPS STUNNED BY GALLARDO

MONACO boss Didier Deschamps has admitted that he was stunned when Marcelo Gallardo refused to accept a place on the bench and watched the 2-1 defeat against Guingamp from the stands.

Gallardo has not performed at his best this season at the Stade Louis II, but Deschamps was baffled by his refusal to be a substitute.

"When Gallardo knew he was on the bench I knew by his reaction that he was not happy and that I couldn't trust him to be there," said Deschamps. "Frankly, it's an attitude that I just don't understand.

"His behaviour is beyond me and I must admit that I am a little bit stunned."

Gallardo's refusal to take his place on the bench is the latest incident in his turbulent career in The Principality, but Deschamps insists that he has confidence in his ability despite his below-par performances this season.

"He does have my trust despite performances that have not been equal to his true potential, but if he would play at his best he would be unquestionable.

"I am trying to find the best team, that's why I decided to keep him on the bench against Guingamp. It was an isolated decision taken for a particular match.

"I am not here to ban anyone from the squad but if Marcelo refuses to respect my decisions and the rest of the team, then of course he will ban himself."
