ASAMOAH REVEALS GERMAN PRIDE

GERALD ASAMOAH has revealed his pride at representing Germany on the international stage in spite of his African origins.

The Schalke front-man became the first African-born player to don the German jersey and the Ghana-born star admits it was a hard decision to play for his adopted homeland.

"It wasn't easy. You have this fear that you won't be accepted, and for that reason I wasn't sure I should even choose to play for Germany or not," revealed Asamoah.

Germany and its troubled past mean xenophobia is still a sore point and several Bundesliga players have put the situation under the microscope with claims that the harsh treatment of foreigners is still prominent.

However, Asamoah, 23, believes he made the right decision choosing Rudi Voller's side and claims he 'feels German'.

"I am proud to be the first black man to play for Germany," said the powerful forward.

Asamoah moved to Hannover as a 12-year-old and having been in Germany for over a decade he more than qualifies for German citizenship.

"I live here in Germany. I travel only to Ghana for vacation," added the star.

"I've been in Germany a long time, speak German and have German friends."

The Konigsbaluen marksman is not the first non-white person to represent Germany. Erwin Kostedde (1974) and Jimmy Hartwig (1979) were black American servicemen staioned in the country.
