CAHILL SIGNS NEW LIONS DEAL

MILLWALL midfielder Tim Cahill has pledged his future to the club by signing a new four-year deal.

The new deal will keep the highly-rated ace at The New Den until 2005.

The 21-year-old Australian, who has attracted the interest of a number of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa, has always insisted that he was happy to stay at Millwall.

"Never once did I say that I didn't want to stay at Millwall," Cahill told the club's official website. "I'm happy here and always have been. This is my club and as a group of young players we've been together a long time and we're growing stronger together.

"It would have been a real pity for this squad to start to break up after the success we've had already, and we just want to see if we can get into the Premiership together ultimately. I want to play with Millwall and with the other boys in the Premiership. The bond here is tremendous and the fact that everyone has signed new contracts proves that.

"The management team of Mark McGhee, Steve Gritt, Ray Harford and Joe McLaughlin have a wealth of experience and knowledge which they're passing onto us every day, and the Chairman has dealt with the progression from the Second Division by offering us all new contracts rather than going out and spending the money on new players to replace us."

Lions boss Mark McGhee was delighted to have secured the future of Cahill.

"I think the reason that Tim and the others have committed themselves to Millwall is that they have been successful, they have been looked after and they can see that there is ambition here," said McGhee.

"They're enjoying themselves as a group and can see that there are good things going on here. The future of this club is dependent on the approach we've taken. Millwall fans want to see players who want to play for this football club and they've got that.

"Don't underestimate Tim's committment in signing a new contract. Tim was in a very very strong position. He could easily have up and left for a bigger or more glamorous club who would have paid more money than Millwall. But he decided that at this stage of his career Millwall is the best place for him to continue his development."
