LOWE NOT EXPECTING WETHERALL MOVE

SOUTHAMPTON have confirmed that they have held talks with Bradford City's David Wetherall, but say any deal could fall through over doubts surrounding his fitness.

Southampton club secretary Brian Truscott confirmed that talks had taken place between the club and the player.

"I was away last Thursday evening and I understand that, in my absence, David came down here - but nothing whatsoever has been agreed," said Truscott.

The 30-year-old centre half has been lined up for a £1.5 million move to St Mary's but chairman Rupert Lowe now says that it looks unlikely that he will be moving to the south coast.

"I don't think he will be coming to us but we are still looking to strengthen and we have a few things in the pipeline," said Lowe.

"Gordon Strachan has already brought in two new players and I thought both of them did extremely well on Saturday. Paul Williams was excellent and Paul Telfer got in some good crosses."

Wetherall played with Strachan while at Leeds but worries about his persistent groin injury look to have hindered any possible move away from The Bantams.

The Saints are still looking for their first win at home following Saturday's defeat against Blackburn Rovers, and Lowe admits that new faces are being looked at.

"No-one could complain about the passion or the effort and I thought we were unlucky to lose a goal which looked offside, but we need to bring in new faces and we have some lined up," added Lowe.
