FAIRYTALE HOME DEBUT FOR PALMER

CARLTON PALMER helped his side to their first win since he took charge as his 60 minute volley secured a 2-1 win over high-flying Norwich City at Edgeley Park.

The former England international made his Stockport debut at centre half and had a magnificent game alongside Leo Roget to fend of a Norwich side who could have gone top of the table.

County went ahead after 28 minutes when Glynn Hurst headed home brilliantly and then their lead doubled on the hour when Palmer (pictured) found himself unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box and he scored his first goal for two years as he volleyed home Peter Clarke's free kick.

The home side's task of hanging on was made even harder when midfielder Ali Gibb was red carded on 69 minutes for two bookings in two minutes.

Norwich manager Nigel Worthington then threw on three substitutes at once in Alex Notman, Steen Nedergaard and Mark Rivers in a bid to get back into the game.

Northern Ireland international Phil Mulryne did exactly that with five minutes remaining when he fired past Lee Jones in the home goal to give The Canaries hope.

Iwan Roberts and Mulryne both had chances to pull the away side level in a frantic last few minutes, but that would have been very harsh on Palmer and his side who deserved the win which now sees them just two points adrift of second-bottom Barnsley.

Palmer has now took four points from his two games in charge and was delighted after the game with his side, saying: "They have done me proud tonight.

"Confidence was very low, but that was down in some ways to the way they were playing and now we are just trying to do something different.

"I am just pleased with the lads and how hard they worked."
