LAZIO APPEAL AGAINST STAM DRUG BAN

LAZIO have, as expected, launched an appeal against the decision to ban Jaap Stam for testing 'non-negative' for banned steroid nandrolone.

Stam is one of several high profile players in recent months to test positive for the banned drug, with Lazio team-mate Fernando Couto and fellow Dutch internationals Frank de Boer and Edgar Davids all being hit with lengthy bans.

All of the players, including the bemused Stam, have denied their guilt - and attention has been switched somewhat to the supplements given to the players by club and country.

The Roman club were expected to appeal against Stam's automatic ban - which comes after rule changes that mean players are instantly ineligible - and will anxiously wait for the results of a secondary test.
