KOVACEVIC A MARKED MAN

REAL SOCIEDAD'S search for a striker could see them head down familiar trails as Darko Kovacevic has been rumoured as a possible December transfer window purchase.

Kovacevic is currently with Lazio, but an offer in the region of 2,000 million pesetas (£7.2 million) could see him return to Spain.

However, it is this high valuation of a player that has hardly set the Italian footballing world alight that Kovacevic believes is stopping the transfer from going through.  The Yugoslavian believes he could possibly go on loan to Sociedad, with a purchase option at the end of it.

Valencia and Real Betis have also shown interest in Kovacevic, along with Portuguese giants Benfica who are also looking to get the player in December.

"I am enjoying Rome and the directors do not want to sell me, but it would delight me if they clubs could reach an agreement for me to return to San Sebastian," said Kovacevic.

He added: "It would be great to return to Real, because I spent my better years there.  I would negotiate if they called me.

"I believe that the greatest difficulty would be in my contract, which is very high.  It is clear that I will not be a free agent, but I have a very high buy-out clause up to 2005 and, knowing the policy of Sociedad, it would be very difficult."

Kovacevic scored 41 times in the three seasons he was with Sociedad and admitted he was frustrated in Italy: "Here I am well, but am not playing.  Ahead of me is Hernan Crespo and Simone Inzaghi."
