PIRES HAPPY TO REJECT SPANISH MOVES

ARSENAL midfielder Robert Pires has revealed he turned down bids from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Valencia in the summer to stay at Highbury.

Both clubs made bids for the French international during the close season, but Pires rejected them as he is happy in North London.

The former Metz and Marseille ace almost joined Real two seasons ago before opting for Arsenal and he feels he made the right choice even though he dreamt of playing for Madrid as a kid.

"This summer Valencia made a bid to get me and then it was the turn of Real Madrid," Pires told The Daily Star.

"Since I was a little boy I have dreamed of playing for Real Madrid. But I chose to stay with the Gunners and I am very happy with my decision.

"I was very close to signing for Real Madrid, but there it is even worse and madder than it is in Marseille. But it is cool at Arsenal."

The 28-year-old is happy to pledge his future to The Gunners as he is content with life at Highbury after enduring a difficult spell at Marseille.

"Arsenal give me confidence and tranquility of mind - which is everything that I lost in Marseille.

"There is a different culture here and there is respect for the players and the team."

The World Cup and European Championship winner, who has been in fine form this season, believes that he has made the right decision to stay in England.

"I feel that I can get better and better and that my best football is still ahead of me.

"The reason for that is that I am 100% happy in my private life and in my football. If you do not play well all of the time here it is okay, but in France they do not forgive or forget.

"When we lost 6-1 to Manchester United last season there was no hassle from the fans - they were just disappointed like we were.

"Supporters want to enjoy themselves here and when you see all the love in the stadium you want to do well for them.

"You will find more French players coming here because we enjoy The Premiership. There is a good atmosphere here," added Pires.
