UNITED LINKED WITH MENDIETA MOVE

MANCHESTER UNITED are said to be interested in signing Lazio ace Gaizka Mendieta, but face competition from Spanish giants Real Madrid, according to reports in Italy.

It is reported The Red Devils would consider swapping Argentinian ace Juan Sebastian Veron, who they signed from Lazio in a £28.1 million deal this summer, for the Spaniard, but Real are keen to bring him back to Spain.

Mendieta was a key part of the Valencia team that reached successive Champions League finals, but he quit the club for a move to Italy in July in a £28 million deal. Mendieta has failed to adjust to life in Serie A and a move to Madrid would seem the most likely with the club looking for a strike partner for Raul.

Meanwhile, United have been confirmed as the richest football club in the world.

It is the fourth year in succession that the Old Trafford giants have been confirmed as the world's richest club after Deloite and Touche Sport published their annual report.

Scottish giants Rangers moved up from 18th to 15th in the list, while cross-city rivals Celtic slipped to 22nd from 20th.

Spanish champions Real Madrid came in second, while Chelsea (7th), Arsenal (11th), Leeds United (13th), Tottenham (17th) Liverpool (19th) and Newcastle (20th) also featured.
