GUARDIOLA QUIT THREAT

BRESCIA'S Spanish international Pep Guardiola has insisted that he will retire from football if he cannot clear his name of drugs charges before the end of the season.

The former Barcelona star has failed two separate tests for banned steroid nandrolone following games against Lazio and Piacenza, and looks set to be banned for up to 18 months as the Figc (Italian FA) crack down on a problem that is blighting their game.

Guardiola insists that he is innocent, but faces a tough period proving that he has not taken nandrolone knowingly.

"I need to demonstrate that I have taken no illegal substances," said a visibly upset Guardiola. "If that doesn't happen in the next four months I will quit the game.

"My body could be producing this substance on its own. The only certain thing is that all I've taken are simple vitamins.

"I will not allow plans for a possible reduction in the ban to come into effect."

Guardiola only recently joined Brescia, after deciding not to renew his contract at Barcelona in the summer.

He is the second high-profile import into Italy to come to the attention of the media in recent weeks after falling foul of drugs tests - with Lazio's Jaap Stam also standing accused of a similar offence.

Stam joined the Roman club from Manchester United, and is also pleading innocence.
