SANDER EXCITED BY REAL CHALLENGE
The Dutchman, who fell out-of-favour at Liverpool earlier this season, completed his £3.3 million move to San Sebastian on Sunday and after being unveiled to the fans he admitted he is looking forward to the challenge of helping the side climb up the table.
The former Vitesse Arnhem ace admitted that the prospect of playing under former Liverpool star John Toshack was a big factor in him joining the Spanish club.
"I know that Real has a great history, with a great reputation and that the fact that John Toshack is coach has been important in my decision," said Westerveld.
"He has told me what the club is like and their objectives and ambitions. Seeing all this I decided to sign for Real.
Westerveld has become the club's most expensive signing, but Toshack was not worried about the price as he was determined to get him.
"In my opinion we have signed an excellent goalkeeper," said Toshack. "Liverpool had made him the most expensive goalkeeper in England when they bought him.
"I have every confidence in him and that is the reason I brought him here.
Westerveld's arrival is set to push Swedish goalkeeper Mattias Asper out the exit door at San Sebastian and Toshack has told him he can leave to find a new club.
