O'LEARY: VILLAGE IDIOT TAG SPURRED WOODY ON

DAVID O'LEARY has admitted that his hard words in the press about 'village-idiot' Jonathan Woodgate have had the desired effect on the Leeds United defender.

Woodgate, convicted of affray after two trials into the assault on a student, was rightly criticised by the media, but the words of manager and mentor O'Leary must have stung even more.

"Jonathan was at the point of mental destruction," explained O'Leary ahead of an FA Cup tie against Cardiff City.

"I had to pick him up off the floor and provide constant words of support and I maybe upset him a little by calling him the village idiot.

"I knew it would bug him, and it did. But Woody has certainly put things right now.

"In my opinion he and Rio can be the best defensive partnership in England for the next ten years.

"If they are playing well for England and doing their best jobs for Leeds everything follows."
