Independiente claim United Forlan enquiry
United have been linked with a move for the Uruguayan star as they seek to bolster their attacking options in the wake of Andy Cole's departure to Blackburn Rovers.
The 22-year-old has been a long-term target for the Premiership champions and he has previously declared an interest in playing in England.
Independiente vice-chairman Fernando Sciaccaluga admitted that he is expecting to find out the result of discussions in the next few days and with the Argentine club fighting a losing battle to keep the striker in the wake of the cash crisis afflicting the country, he is set to be sold.
"We have been approached by Manchester United and agents representing them," he said.
"We should know the result of these discussions in the next few days and decide whether Forlan stays or goes."
With doubts surrounding the future of Dwight Yorke at Old Trafford, United have been linked with moves in the transfer market to replace Cole and Yorke should he leave.
West Ham forward Paolo Di Canio has also been strongly linked with a move to United with The Hammers rejecting the initial bid for the skilful Italian.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has previously stated that he is happy with his squad and any move for Forlan may have to wait until the end of the season.
