Ommel signs - Ferrante on trial

BRISTOL ROVERS have handed striker Sergio Ommel a contract until the end of the season, whilst West Ham youngster Michael Ferrante has arrived at the Memorial Ground on trial.

Ommel has fared well for The Pirates since arriving for a trial in December, scoring four goals in 12 appearances, and boss Garry Thompson says he can now try and earn a longer deal in the West Country by impressing him further.

"Sergio gives us great options in attack, and helps take a lot of the pressure off Nathan (Ellington) because he can do the job of winning the high balls and flick-ons leaving Nathan to do what he does best," Thompson said.

"He's keeping Martin Cameron out of the side now and has his nose in front of the other strikers so he's happy.

"Overall he's done well in the month he's been here and now he's got a chance to demonstrate that he should stay here longer."

Meanwhile Ferrante will also hope to earn a contract after joining the club on trial.

Ferrante (pictured) was poised for a move to Danish side FC Midtjylland late last year, but it did not materialise. The 20-year-old Australian will hope to impress Thompson and gain some valuable first team experience before returning to Upton Park.
