Agent reveals Hertha Sonck interest
THE agent of Belgian hot-shot Wesley Sonck, Willy Hox, has told planetfootball that Bundesliga titans Hertha Berlin are on the trail of the 23-year-old Genk star.
The Belgian international is rated as one of the brightest prospects in his homeland and his goalscoring feats in the Jupiler League - 21 goals in 19 games this term - have not gone unnoticed with a host of clubs interested in his services.
"Yes (Hertha), Berlin have shown an interest in Wesley Sonck," Hox told planetfootball. "They have not yet made an offer and it depends on the price.
"The newspapers are talking about a é¼9 million transfer fee."
With Michael Preetz the wrong side of 30, enigmatic Brazilian Alex Alves firing blanks and Iranian Ali Daei set to return to his homeland, The Old Lady are keen to add some firepower as they look to depose Bayern Munich as German champions.
Rivals Schalke have also been linked with the target-man and Hox admitted that Sonck, who has a contract until 2004, was tempted by the prospect of playing in the Bundesliga.
"Wesley does have an interest in going to Germany," he added.
A host of Premier League sides were reportedly tracking the speedy marksman and Hox confirmed that Peter Reid's Sunderland were admirers but had not followed up their interest.
"There is a lot of interest. Sunderland did have contact, but nothing was concrete," added Hox.
Serie A outfit Udinese are also thought to be monitoring Sonck who seems destined to leave Genk for a bigger club sooner rather than later.
