Ruud impressed by Forlan
The Dutch hot shot has been impressed with Forlan since he arrived from Independiente and his 15 minute appearance as a substitute against Bolton in midweek confirmed van Nistelrooy's opinion.
Van Nistelrooy believes it was important for United to capture a new striker following the sale of Andy Cole, and he is looking forward to forming a partnership with the Uruguayan.
"I think it's very good that he's come in," said van Nistelrooy. "After Coley left I think it was necessary for us to get a striker.
"With Diego we have got a very young and talented player.
"He only came on for the last 15 minutes but you could see that he has a lot of potential. First impressions for me are very good."
Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been equally impressed with the 22-year-old and believes his new recruit will quickly settle in to The Premiership.
"We've all been impressed with him so far as he's been terrific in training," Ferguson told the club's official website.
"He got 15 minutes the other night as I wanted him to acclimatise in the English game. You'll see the improvement gradually.
"He didn't look out of place. He's got two good feet, he's quick and alive and I thought he did very, very well.
"Argentine football is very good, it's a very tough league. It may be played at a different tempo to ours but Diego should settle in here fine."
Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Roma coach Fabio Capello has been handed an ultimatum if he wants to become the next manager of Manchester United.
Capello is understood to have been told he has until the end of February to decide whether he wants to replace Ferguson in the Old Trafford hot seat.
