Strachan wins Manager of the Month award

GORDON STRACHAN has been named Barclaycard Manager of the Month for January, after leading Southampton through their toughest set of fixtures so far this season.

Few would have given The Saints a chance from a sequence of fixtures, which included two matches against Liverpool, an away trip to Chelsea, and home matches to Manchester United and West Ham.

However, Strachan's side prevailed in taking four points from the Anfield side, including a 2-0 victory at St. Mary's. Add to the list, successes over The Blues at Stamford Bridge and The Hammers at home, and Southampton sit in 13th in the Premiership table.

Only defeat at home to United and an early exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Division One Rotherham, soured what was a productive month for the South Coast club.

Strachan was bursting with pride, telling The Saints' official website: "It is a nice feeling to win this award - especially after the month we have had.

"I cannot remember a group of fixtures as hard as this, even when I was playing. We thought we were playing in the Champions League there for a while!

"If you had offered me this number of points eight games ago then we would have taken it. And for me to get this award means we must be doing something right.

"It says the club and the players are doing okay at this moment in time. It does not mean everything is rosy all the time but that we are starting to do things right.

"It is an indication to the players that if they keep doing things right then life becomes easier and more enjoyable. We have to live with the ups and downs in football and accept them for what they are without getting too carried away at either end of the scale.

"It has been a reasonably successful period but this award does not mean we are better than anyone else, just that we have done a half decent job over the last few weeks."

It is the third time that the former Aberdeen, Manchester United, and Leeds United player has claimed the award, having previously won it on two occasions at Coventry City. But the former Scottish international has no fears of any 'jinx' that seems to hit teams after receiving the honour.

Strachan said: "We are doing OK at the moment. We won at Chelsea but played a lot better in the first 45 minutes at home to Manchester United.

"We deserved to beat Liverpool here but were fortunate to get a draw up there. Our attitude kept us in it because we were never far away. And the longer the game went on, we could have sneaked a win - although we would not have deserved it."

Ipswich's Marcus Bent won the Player of the Month for January, helping the Suffolk side out of the relegation zone and into 12th in the Premiership table.
