Van Bommel drops hint

DUTCH midfielder Mark van Bommel has rekindled the interest of England's top clubs by admitting that he would love to play in The Premiership, hinting that Arsenal are favourites.

The PSV Eindhoven ace lines up for the Dutch national side against England on Wednesday night looking for a repeat of the game at White Hart Lane last August when he scored in a 2-0 win for the Dutch, in Sven Goran Eriksson's only defeat since taking charge.

The 24-year-old's rocket strike that screamed past Nigel Martyn launched him into the public eye, and onto the wanted list of many of the big clubs around Europe.

Arsenal have long been linked with Van Bommel, who shares Dennis Bergkamp's agent, and with Patrick Vieira looking increasingly likely to be lured away to Real Madrid, he could be the man to fill the gap.

Arsene Wenger has admitted his admiration for Van Bommel, although the Dutch club insists that no contact has been made with The Gunners, and the player has hinted of a preference towards North London.

"Arsenal are a great club and I want to go to England, but there are a number of great clubs there," said Van Bommel.

"My agent is Rob Jansen, who also represents Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp.

"I don't know if there has been any contact between Arsenal and Rob. I told him that all I wanted to do was concentrate on playing for PSV, but that if it got serious he should call me.

"But I think my game is suited to English football. It is a great country, not only for the level of the game, which is higher than Holland, and the quality of the players, but also for the spectators.

"If I go to England, I know that every game will be sold out. We are lucky at Eindhoven, because we get big crowds, but if another club goes to play at Fortuna Sittard, there's nobody there. In England it's very different.

Manchester United are also said to be interested in the player, with Sir Alex Ferguson possibly hoping that the friendship between Van Bommel and Ruud van Nistelrooy will give them the edge over Arsenal, should they pursue the matter.

"It hasn't surprised me that he's scored so many goals," Van Bommel said of his team-mate Van Nistelrooy.

"He makes it so easy to play the ball to him with the way he spins off his marker and his movement.

"What I've seen at United is a change in him, in that he's playing closer to the goal now than he did in Holland. I think that's why he's scored so many but it was great to play with him and train with him at PSV."
