Mboma joins Black Cats

SUNDERLAND have completed the signing of Parma's Cameroonian international Patrick Mboma on loan until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old striker has passed a medical at the Stadium of Light and will be available to make his debut in the North East derby against Newcastle a week on Sunday.

The 2000 African Player of the Year will give Peter Reid's side much-needed competition for regular striking duo, Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips, as Sunderland look to secure their Premiership future for another season and push for a third consecutive top ten finish.

He has been looking for a move away from the Ennio Tardini over the last month as he is behind the likes of Marco Di Vaio, Hakan Sukur and Emmiliano Bonazzoli in the pecking order of the Serie A side.

After two fairly successful Serie A campaigns with Cagliari, Mboma was unable to reproduce this form after joining Parma in the summer of 2000 and has scored just five goals in 24 starts for the Gialloblu.

Mboma proved his credentials in the recent African Nations Cup where he was the star of the early rounds scoring three goals for eventual winners Cameroon, before suffering a foot injury in the quarter finals that kept him out of his country's penalty shoot-out victory over Senegal in Sunday's final.
