Wenger angry at vindictive FA

ARSENAL boss Arsene Wenger has slammed the decision to investigate Patrick Vieira for an alleged elbowing incident, suggesting that the Frenchman is the subject of a witch-hunt because of his nationality.

Vieira is once more in hot water after allegations that he deliberately used his elbow in a clash with Gillingham's Iffy Onoura in an FA Cup clash at Highbury.

Wenger, who has criticised the treatment of his players on several occasions, has once more lashed out at a decision to consider a misconduct charge, if referee Andy D'Urso did not see the incident.

"I think there's a campaign to get Patrick charged every time," said an angry Wenger.

"If he was an England international going to the World Cup, I don't think it would be the same.

"I am amazed how big Patrick's elbows are. He can now reach players who are 10 yards away from him.

"I didn't even see it but Onoura has said he doesn't know whether it was intentional or not.

"It's a joke. It's better to say that we will give Patrick Vieira a 15-match ban so we are all happy, even if he didn't do anything!"

Wenger is also still fuming about the FA's assertion that a game brought forward to give The Gunners a 48-hour break before their Champions League clash against Deportivo La Coruna, has not been awarded a noon kick-off.

Arsenal were scheduled to play Newcastle United in the quarter finals of the FA Cup on the Sunday, but the close proximity of a European game has led to the game being moved back to the previous day.

However, Wenger is deeply unhappy that the game is now scheduled to be played at 5.35 pm rather than at noon - the favoured time of the Gunners boss.

"It is unbelievable, the worst time for us and we don't agree with it at all," said Wenger.

"We don't ask a lot of favours from the FA. They complain that nobody takes the FA Cup seriously. We have always done that and tried to win it, yet this is how we get treated."

Finally Wenger was full of praise for Arsenal and England centre back Sol Campbell, crediting the powerful ex-Spurs man as the reason for his club's success away from Highbury.

"Sol has been tremendous for us over the past two months and our away record in The Premiership is down to him," stated Wenger.
