Champions League Preview

MANCHESTER UNITED can cement their position at the top of Champions League Group A with victory in Nantes, while Liverpool chase their first success of the second phase at home to Galatasaray.

Also in The Red Devils' group, Bayern Munich travel to the fortress of Boavista but arguably the most attractive fixture of the night is Barcelona's intoxicating tussle with Serie A champions Roma at Camp Nou.

Nantes v Manchester United

Le Championnat title holders have struggled this season and have spent the majority of the campaign locked in the relegation zone, although a post-Christmas resurgence has alleviated their fears.

Angel Marcos has replaced Raynald Denoueix at the Nantes helm and this will be his first Champions League match.

Nantes have lost both of their games in Group A 1-0 as they were beaten in Boavista and at home by Bayern Munich.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has demanded his players deliver the goods on resumption of the Champions League and they have an excellent record against French opposition, losing only once in 14 meetings.

Their away form in Europe, though, always represents a cause for concern with one win in seven but in The Premiership, they have won their last six on the road.

Dutch hot shot Ruud van Nistelrooy is 3/1 to open the scoring and he has scored in his last four Champions League appearances.

Boavista v Bayern Munich

The German giants are level on points with United at the head of Group A but if results go their way, Boavista could find themselves top come the final whistle.

They have been nigh on impregnable at home in Europe this season with only Liverpool managing to emerge with a point, as Borussia Dortmund, Dinamo Kiev and Nantes have all fallen by the wayside.

The Portuguese champions will have key midfielder Erwin Sanchez back for this tie, along with Elpidio Silva, who has scored in three of the four home fixtures.

Pedro Santos also returns to bolster the midfield but Petit is injured, while striker Glauber has been banned provisionally after failing a drugs test.

Bayern have been in inconsistent form on the domestic front recently but a solid performance in this clash could reignite their season.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's troops have won their last two European away games 1-0 but will be without Alexander Zickler, Owen Hargreaves and Paulo Sergio as they seek a hat-trick.

Liverpool v Galatasaray

The Reds presently prop up Group B but this potentially explosive encounter provides their best chance of picking up three points.

Chris Kirkland is set to replace the injured Jerzy Dudek in goal but Michael Owen (11/4 first scorer) has shaken off the hamstring problem that sidelined him from England duty last week.

Owen has scored twice at Anfield in the Champions League, and alongside the red-hot Emile Heskey (9/2 first scorer), is likely to torment the Turkish defence.

Galatasaray will head to Merseyside intent on sustaining their unbeaten record in Group B, after draws at home to Roma and away to Barcelona.

Midfield ace Sergen Yalcin is injured while defender Capone is suspended.

Barcelona v Roma

The Catalan giants are the only team in the group to have registered a victory thus far, following their 3-1 triumph at Anfield.

Though they drew with Galatasaray in Camp Nou last time, they did win all three of their home fixtures in the opening group phase.

Carles Rexach's only injury problem is in replacing Patrik Andersson, with French defender Phillipe Christanval set to be named instead of the Swede.

Like Galatasaray, Roma have drawn both of their games, and three of their four away matches in the Champions League have ended in stalemates.

Fabio Capello is without the services of midfielder Marcos Assuncao but he will recall the inspirational Francesco Totti, who was rested at the weekend.
