McLeish admits McAllister move

RANGERS boss Alex McLeish has admitted an interest in veteran Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister, but stressed nothing will happen in the near future.

The former Hibernian manager has been linked with a whole host of quality midfielders since taking the reins at Ibrox, with former Scotland international McAllister the latest name to be mentioned.

McLeish has admitted he made an approach to take the 37-year-old on loan earlier in the campaign, but a deal failed to materialise.

Speaking after his side`s Scottish Cup quarter final win over Forfar, McLeish claimed he will continue to monitor McAllister`s situation, but feels a deal is unlikely to be concluded.

He said: "I know he is out of contract but there is nothing else happening at the moment. We are aware of him but we haven't any plans.

"We did contact him about a possible loan move when he was out of the side but that didn't happen.

"You can never say never but I have had a lot of names thrown at me, good players, and they are not all coming to Ibrox."

McLeish has restored confidence in the Ibrox dressing room since taking over from Dick Advocaat, but has continually stated that he would like a partner for Barry Ferguson in the middle of the park.

With McAllister only a fringe player at Anfield due to the form Dietmar Hamann and Steven Gerrard, the Scot may be tempted by the prospect of finishing his career in the SPL.
