Sheri blasts Poll incompetence

TEDDY SHERINGHAM blasted referee Graeme Poll for ignoring his penalty claim in the final minutes of the Worthington Cup defeat by Blackburn.

The England marksman appeared to be felled by Nils-Eric Johannson in the box with the game close to the final whistle but despite loud appeals from the Spurs fans and players, Poll waved play on.

"It was definitely a penalty, I cannot believe he has not given it. You will probably read about it in his book in six months` time," said a bitter Sheringham.

"I was on to him all game so he decided not to give it. That shows the sort of fella you are dealing with."

Coach Glenn Hoddle backed Sheringham's criticism of Poll, claiming the official did not even consider awarding the spot-kick.

"The massive key one for us is it's a nailed-on penalty we didn't get on the day. Graham Poll has decided very quickly not to give it, he's not even looked at the linesman," fumed Hoddle.

"You need a bit of fortune and we didn't have that."
