Henry backs Pires for top award

ARSENAL striker Thierry Henry has backed his Highbury team-mate Robert Pires to scoop the Player of the Year award.

The French international has been in scintillating form this season for The Gunners as they still chase a treble of Premiership, Champions League and FA Cup success this term.

The former Metz and Marseille man has scored nine goals this season and his performances have also won support from Gunners boss Arsene Wenger and captain Tony Adams to win the player title this season.

"The way he can pass the ball and what he can do is unbelievable. He has so much ability," said Henry.

"I am very pleased for him after the bad time he had at Marseille, as well as when he first arrived here because everyone was still talking about Marc Overmars.

"But he has shown that he is a great player and is playing all the time in the French team so he deserves everything that people are saying about him."

Henry is also convinced that Arsenal's French connection is working so well that he thinks it is almost "telepathic."

The former Juventus and Monaco striker has built-up an amazing understanding with Pires, Patrick Vieira and Sylvain Wiltord in the Arsenal side having played with them in the French team together also, but he feels the understanding just does not end there.

"We know each other so well that sometimes we don't even have to look at each other; we just pass the ball," said Henry.

"I don't know if it's telepathy but I know what Robert, Sylvain and Patrick are going to do. You need time, but it's coming together.

"We all play in the French national team together, but it's also about players like Lauren and Freddie Ljungberg if they are playing as well."
