Savage blow for Gio

ARSENAL have been dealt a crushing blow with the news that Dutch ace Giovanni Van Bronckhorst faces nine months out with a knee injury.

The former Rangers midfielder had finally established himself at Highbury after an indifferent period at the start of the campaign, but is likely to be out until Christmas after rupturing his cruciate knee ligament in Saturday`s Premiership clash with Fulham.

A scan carried out on Wednesday highlighted the devastating news, and he will now have surgery before undergoing an intensive rehabilitation period.

The loss of the Dutch international will be a bitter pill for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger to swallow, as the 27-year-old`s versatility meant he could occupy a variety of positions.

He has filled in at full back due to Arsenal`s defensive problems, but Wenger will have to find other options as he battles on three fronts.
