Neill red card overturned

BLACKBURN have been handed a timely boost, with the Football Association rescinding Lucas Neill`s red card that he picked up in the FA Cup defeat at Middlesbrough.

The Australian defender was adjudged to have fouled Robbie Stockdale as the Boro player raced towards Blackburn`s penalty area, and referee Graham Barber deemed it serious enough to brandish a straight red card.

This decision enraged Rovers boss Graeme Souness, who faces an FA hearing where he will have to explain his actions, and the club lodged an immediate appeal.

Match officials, including Barber, have reviewed the video and deemed the offence not worthy of a red card.

An FA statement released on Friday said: "Following a review by the match officials of the incident that saw Lucas Neill sent-off in Blackburn's recent FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough, it has been decided that the one-match suspension will not be imposed.

"The suspension would have begun this weekend but the player is now eligible for selection."

Neill will now be free to face North West rivals Bolton in a relegation six-pointer at The Reebok Stadium.
