Shay to be given new deal
Given has been outstanding in the club's resurgence this season and has been a pivotal factor behind their sustained Premiership title chase.
The 25-year-old's current deal expires at the end of next season and preliminary talks have already been held about extending it until 2008.
The Republic of Ireland international has been at St James' Park for almost five years and should he put pen to paper on a fresh contract, it will complete a remarkable turnaround for the talented keeper.
Only last season, Given slapped in a transfer request bemoaning his lack of first team opportunities but he is now firmly established as Bobby Robson's number one.
He admits he is perfectly happy to extend his stay on Tyneside and is confident of signing a new deal.
"My contract is up next year and it would be nice to get something sorted out," said Given.
"We had a meeting last week on the contract talks.
"I want to stay here for most of the rest of my career. I'm still only 25 and as long as the club want me, it will be signed."
