Sand eyes Champions League
The German side's pre-season target was to qualify for the Uefa Cup but though they are lying fifth in Die Bundesliga, they are only three points adrift of third spot.
They have an excellent opportunity of inching closer towards European football for next term when they entertain Bayern Munich in the cup semi-finals on Wednesday evening.
Danish marksman Sand is eager for the cup holders to progress as even if they miss out on the Champions League, success in the knockout competition would still be a fitting way to draw the curtain on the domestic campaign.
"It was a fantastic experience when we won the cup final against Union Berlin last year and it would be really big if we can retain the cup this year," Sand told BT.
"But it's also important because a cup victory would allow us to secure the goal of the season which was to obtain a place in the Uefa Cup.
"Champions League participation is still the aim through a top three finish in Die Bundesliga but we would be more relieved if we are through to play the cup final on May 11.
"It would also be the perfect end to the German season before the World Cup."
One disappointment for Sand this season has been the regular injuries to his striker partner Emile Mpenza.
He added: "I feel Mpenza and I have formed a fantastic partnership and it's really sad that he keeps picking up injuries."
