Vieri signs new Inter deal

INTERNAZIONALE striker Christian Vieri has signed a new contract with the Italian giants that will keep him at the club until 2006.

The Italian international has been in sensational form for Inter this season after hitting 21 goals in just 20 appearances for Hector Cuper's side.

"We met, we talked for five minutes, then we had an agreement. I am very happy," said Inter president Massimo Moratti.

"I was sure he would sign, but the most important thing was that he had the same ideas I have about the future.

"Vieri told me: 'President, I am great in Milan and I want to stay. Now I will wait for your move.' I liked these words a lot because Vieri sees himself as the captain of our ship.

"Moreover, all his team-mates have a great relationship with Vieri and our manager Hector Cuper is very clever in understanding how to manage a player like him."

Vieiri has been the spearhead behind Inter's push for the Italian championship this season and why they are still well in the hunt for their first Scudetto since 1989.

The race for the Serie A title is now down to three clubs with Inter, Juventus and reigning champions Roma separated by just two points.
