Mido the hero for Ajax

AJAX continued their recent scintillating form with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Heerenveen.

More than 40,000 people packed into the Amsterdam ArenA to see Ajax extend their lead at the top of the Eredivisie table.

Ahmed Hassam, nicknamed 'Mido,' proved to be the hero for his side, scoring a goal in each half to guarantee the three points before being substituted to rapturous applause for Nikos Machlas.

The Egyptian wonder-kid was playing in an advanced forward role, and made the most of the opportunity with a fine double strike.

PSV Eindhoven found themselves unable to breakdown a stalwart Vittesse defence in Arnhem, but Feyenoord did cut Ajax's lead at the head of the table with a comfortable 3-0 win against FC Den Bosch.

Pierre van Hooijdonk grabbed a brace, his strikes, the second a penalty, coming either side of a Bonaventure Kalou goal.

FC Utrecht also cantered to a 3-0 home win courtesy of goals from Patrick Zwaanswijk, Igor Gluscevic and Stefaan Tanghe.

RKC Waalwijk battled to a 2-1 win over NEC Nijmegen, with Jochen Janssen and Garry de Graef's goals only countered by a Dennis de Nooijer strike for the visitors.

In the other Dutch game of the day Twente Enschende's game against FC Groningen was suspended with the visitors 1-0 up.
