Spurs and Bayern chase Peru ace

TOTTENHAM and Bayern Munich are battling it out to sign highly-rated Peruvian starlet Gianfranco Labarthe.

The 17-year-old Sport Boys ace is regarded as one of the best young prospects in Peru and has attracted the interest of a number of clubs.

The young striker is the son of former Peru star Ernesto Labarthe, who played for his country between 1975 and 1981 including at the 1978 World Cup.

Labarthe came to prominence after helping Peru to win the Under-17 Campeonato Bolivariano in Ecuador and was voted the tournament's best player.

Bayern tried to get him over to Munich for a trial last year, but the move never materialised.

Spurs have been alerted to Labarthe and they are hoping to bring him over to White Hart Lane so that they can have a closer look at him, but Bayern are still keen on him.

Labarthe is regarded as the "new Claudio Pizarro" and with the Peruvian striker already at Bayern Munich, the German champions will be hoping to persuade him to come to The Olympic Stadium.

Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle is keen to bolster his squad after a disappointing last few weeks which has seen them crash out of contention in the FA Cup and the race for a European spot in The Premiership.

Hoddle has demanded that the White Hart Lane board back him in the transfer market and he has been scouring the world in search of exciting talent.

Labarthe holds a European passport through his Italian mother, which would mean that Spurs would have no problem in obtaining a work permit for him if they wanted to sign him.
