Baggies sign Pompey keeper

WEST BROM have snapped up Portsmouth goalkeeper Andy Petterson as manager Gary Megson bolsters his squad before transfer deadline day.

Petterson was one of 16 Pompey players told last week that he had no future at Fratton Park and has moved to The Hawthorns on a short-term deal.

The 32-year-old will provide experienced cover for first-choice Russell Hoult as The Baggies chase automatic promotion to The Premiership.

His arrival is one of four fresh faces that Megson is hoping to add to his squad before Thursday's cut off for transfers and he has also signed Sunderland defender Stanislav Varga on loan.

The most high profile of those is Tranmere midfielder Jason Koumas, whom Megson is anxious to lure to the Midlands.

"There are about four things we want to do by 5pm on Thursday," said Megson.

"We've now got Stanislav and Andy on the way and we're looking at the possibility of bringing another loan signing in.

"We also have an agreement with Tranmere about bringing Jason Koumas to the club. If that happens, everything will become a little bit clearer.

"But with the transfer deadline looming, it makes it that bit more critical."
