Gomes rejects Spurs switch

FIORENTINA striker Nuno Gomes has confirmed that he has rejected the chance of joining Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25-year-old has reiterated his dislike of England by shunning Tottenham's bid to take him on loan for the rest of the season.

"I know about the offer from Tottenham, that they want me for the rest of the season," Gomes told Radio Renaissance.

"But I will continue my job with Fiorentina until the end of the current championship.

"I am concentrating on the national team right now, but I can say that I will not be going to Tottenham."

The news of Gomes's rebuff will be disappointing to Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle who would have seen the Portuguese star as the man to bolster their flagging season.

Tottenham are still hoping to land a Uefa Cup spot, but will have to look elsewhere for a potential signing.

Gomes has previously stated that he could adapt to the English game, but the weather would always get in the way of a move.

"I don't like England as a country from the point of view of the weather," Gomes has previously said. "It is too cold."

Meanwhile, Spurs have extended the stay of goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld until the end of the season, after the Canadian initially joined the White Hart Lane club on a week's trial.
