Hitzfeld slams 'brutal' Roberto Carlos
The Bayern Munich coach was bombarded with stones and other objects on arriving in the Spanish capital and the game was also to prove a heated affair.
With just eight minutes on the clock Brazilian full back Carlos clattered into Salihamidzic - the pair had swapped verbal insults in the press days earlier - and the diminutive winger was left with a broken nose for his troubles.
"The foul on Salihamidzic was brutal. His nose or cheekbone is broken. That was an act of violence by Roberto Carlos," raged Hitzfeld.
The Bosnian international continued the game despite the pain but lost his head in the final seconds and a fierce tackle on Guti saw the referee brandish a red card.
Despite the criticism of Carlos for his no-nonsense challenge Hitzfeld conceded the holders of the trophy were second best, declaring: "We gave everything but Real were a strong team. We deserved to lose.
