O'Neill suffers second injury setback

KEITH O'NEILL has had another cruel turn of fortune with injury, after suffering a dislocated ankle and a broken leg in a freak training session accident with Coventry City team-mate Lee Mills.

The luckless Irishman was participating in his first run-out on Monday since recovering from a long-term pelvic injury, which had kept him out of the Highfield Road side since December.

Training was stopped for the day, after O'Neill was injured when he attempted to challenge Mills, who also was returning from injury.

The 26-year-old has started just seven matches since his £1million move from Middlesbrough last September and underwent surgery on Monday afternoon following the training accident.

After the accident, Coventry boss Roland Nilsson said: "We don't know how bad it is at the moment but it was certainly a very nasty injury which will mean a very long time out for Keith.

"We were just playing a game and he either got his foot caught in the ground or when he challenged Millsy.

"We tried to make him as comfortable as possible until the ambulance arrived and fortunately the club doctor, Moss Gold, was at the training ground to help.

"Everyone was in shock and we ended the (training) session there and then.

"It is a terrible blow for him because he has not had the best of luck with injuries this season and it just makes a bad season for the club even worse.

"As they say, when it rains, it pours."
