Baggio set for miraculous comeback
Baggio suffered knee ligament damage on January 31 in a Coppa Italia game against Parma and it was not thought possible for him to recover in time for him to make a comeback before the World Cup.
However, the 'Divine Ponytail' has stated that he expects to make the bench against Juventus on April 28 - unbelievably less than 90 days since the injury occurred.
Baggio is now back in training and putting his knee through a series of tests, before returning to Serie A action.
"There is only one thing for me to do, work, work and work," said Baggio.
"I feel good and I would be happy to play almost immediately in this weekend's match against Inter, but this is not possible as there are steps to respect in my recovery."
Italian coach Trapattoni only last month stated that he was praying for a miracle that Baggio would be fit for the World Cup, saying: "I'm Catholic and I believe in miracles." - and now his prays look to have been answered.
Brescia president Luigi Corioni is delighted by Baggio's recovery.
"He will establish a record for recovery from this type of injury," he said. "He is determined and is desperate to play.
"He could start on May 5 against Bologna, exactly 90 days after the original injury. That will be even quicker than Carlo Nervo of Bologna, who recovered from a ruptured ligament within 100 days.
"Baggio is extraordinary. He is 35 years-old and he decided to have the operation to try and play football again.
"In one or two matches he will convince Giovanni Trapattoni that Italy will need a player like him at the World Cup."
Baggio will have to prove his fitness and it now remains to be seen whether Trapattoni will be brave enough to select the inspirational forward.
