Hamburg put rivals on brink
Bernardo Romeo (pictured) scored twice with Martin Groth and Nico Hoogma also getting on the scoresheet as the 1983 European Cup champions romped to victory over Kiezkicker.
The key moment of the game came after 13 minutes when Thomas Meggle failed to convert a penalty for the home side.
Ugur Inceman was brought down by Hamburg's Jorg Albertz, but visiting keeper Martin Pieckenhagen pushed away Meggle's kick and his side never looked back.
Hamburg remain in eleventh place though they move level on points with tenth place Wolfsburg.
St Pauli's fate looked desperate anyway at six points below Nurnberg with three games remaining, but any hopes of a remarkable recovery were virtually ended by an extraordinary derby match that neither side will forget soon.
